Did he go overboard in trying to help Kairi?

I dont think so. He tried to do his best to save Kairi from the situation she was in. Giving himself to darkness was a little much, but if it was necessary to save a friend, it probably had to be done.

He definitely loves her. He goes too far in trying to ensure her safety many times in the series. Although, he kinda does the same for Sora, only he did it more times for Kairi :P
